The Master of every vessel when approaching the pilot boat for the purpose of picking up pilot must reduce speed to the minimum for steerage way, maintain VHF contact with the pilot boat and provide good lee if necessary.
Every vessel picking up a pilot must have rigged and ready for use a pilot ladder in good repair and provided with reliable manropes and in accordance with the specifications and terms described in the International Convention for the Safety of life at Sea 1974. The ladder is to be well illuminated between dusk and dawn, and a lifebuoy with a lifeline shall be available at this ladder for immediate use.
