(a) Buys Ballot’s law
A rule useful in locating the certer of cyclones and anticyclones. It states that, facing away from the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure lies to the left. Facing away from the wind in the southern hemisphere, it is to the right; named after Dutch meteorologist C.H.D. Buys Ballot, who published it in 1857.
(b) Atmospheric pressure in Japan is controlled by the season fluctuations in the pressure distribution over the Asian continent, and the Pacific ocean. In winter, pressure rises on the continental mainland, and the resulting anticyclone normally reaches its greatest intensity in January, when it is centered near Mongolia. At this season, the average pressure is lowest to the north-east of Japan, in the neighbourhood of the Aleutian islands.
